Our upcoming book, "The Brass Train Guide" will be the most
comprehensive listing of data and pricing ever about brass trains.
Will it be perfect? Will it be 100% complete? Unfortunately not.
However we are viewing this as a long term project. Phase 1 will be a
two volume set. Volume 1 is a beautiful Hard Cover, 100# paper with
High Res Printing. This Volume will feature a brief history of brass
trains, along with interviews with various importers and a few
collectors. It will also feature 100's of beautiful photos. It will
be 320 Pages. Full Color. It will appeal to the hard-core brass
collector, but we also want to show the beauty and art of collecting
brass trains to others who have not shared in this hobby in the past.
We feel this book will accomplish that. We have hired a professional
graphic artist to put the book together.
Volume II will be the data. This will be black and white. We have
been building a database of all trains for many years. This book will
feature not only HO scale, but all scales. It will also feature
rolling stock, passenger cars etc.
Now as you can imagine collecting all that data has been a huge task.
And some importers have helped greatly, while others have decided
they do not want to include any information. So certain parts will be
almost perfect, and some sections will need some work. I have been
accumulating a very large collection of dealer info sheets etc. for
most importers, going back a very long time.
To start with we anticipate nearly 20,000 entries! This will be MUCH
more extensive than the brown book. My hat is off to John Glabb for
putting forth the effort he did, however we will try to take it up a
few notches.
Also we will be following our guide with either a semi-annual, or
quarterly update. This will allow us to take feedback from collectors
about any mistakes or omissions and update the database. Also it will
take probably at least 3-4 updates before pricing will settle down.
Right now eBay is the main form of pricing, and while I am very
familiar with eBay, I feel it is a very poor price guide!!
More on this in another post.
Please stop by www.brassguide. com and sign up for more information,
and updates on the book. The likely date of release is December 1st,
but we are taking pre-orders on the Deluxe Limited edition at this
time (no money down). Also look for ads in upcoming Model Railroader,
Model Railroad News, RMC etc.
Thanks for reading and I will try to answer any questions in replies
to this post.
